On his website, Tiger Woods has finally acknowledged his "infidelity" and has announced he's taking a break from professional golf.

With the coming end of the decade that no one has a name for (the 00’s? the Naughts?) it’s time to reflect on the greatest athletes of the last 10 years and those who laid the foundation of greatness before. These are the athletes who not only operated at the highest level on the field, but who also made the most significant and lasting impact on society and in popular culture:

The 2000's

Tiger Woods

Had Tiger’s car accident and subsequent personal drama happened in the middle of the decade, we’d probably be writing about a different athlete here. Instead, it happened at the very end of the decade, so Tiger’s incredible run of complete dominance of the PGA Tour and his (then) iconic corporate status remains secure. However, his status going forward from here remains very much in question.

The 1990's

Michael Jordan

Yes, he also did play in the 1980’s, but Mike truly became iconic in the 90’s when he won his 6 NBA titles (1991-93; 1996-98) and four of the amazing five MVP’s (1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1998) of his career. Mike was also named 2000 ESPY Athlete of the Century. And nothing’s more iconic than the true NBA logo.

The 1980's

Larry Bird/Magic Johnson

The saviors of the NBA, Magic and Larry got it all started with the epic 1979 NCAA Final, still the highest rated college basketball game ever. They moved on to the NBA the next year, where fate could have not smiled any bigger on the league when Magic ended up in Los Angeles and Larry in Boston. They would subsequently meet three times in the NBA Finals with Magic’s Lakers squad winning twice. The groundwork was laid for a 6’6” guard from the University of North Carolina to take it to another level.

The 1970's

Pelé

The first foreigner to make a lasting impact in the American sports scene and generally considered the greatest soccer player to ever live, Pelé is credited with increasing the awareness of soccer in the United States and helping jump-start the youth soccer programs that have become so popular in this country. Though well past his prime, the three years he spent with the New York Cosmos of the NASL (1975-1977) has yet to be matched in excitement or buzz (hello, David Beckham?)

The 1960's

Muhammad Ali

His greatest triumphs in the ring occurred during the 1970’s (The Rumble in the Jungle, The Thrilla in Manila) but Ali truly gained iconic status in the 1960’s when he became a symbol of the anti-Vietnam War movement with his refusal to enter the military draft, resulting in his Heavyweight titles being stripped. His name change from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali after his stunning defeat of champion Sonny Liston was, for the time, very controversial and quite unheard of in most American social circles.

Tiger Woods is the #1 Player in the World

Tiger Woods gives new meaning to number 1 player in the world. Especially if you aren't talking about his Golf game. How will fans react towards Tiger when he finally does come back? Is this the end of Tiger Woods as we know it? Will time heal all wounds, at least is the eyes of the public? The scrutiny that Tiger has gone through is nothing to what he will go through simply because he hasn't shown his face. Not that we want to see a busted lip and maybe a new pearly white tooth.



One would think that if you had as much money as Tiger, you would get the ole' "Business Phone" wink wink~. One could assume that if I have this amount of money all it takes is for someone to blow the whistle. All it takes is for one player hating waitress to spill the beans...no pun intended.



How will Tiger's game be after this...I'm talking about golf by the way. Will he be able to play the field I mean course like he used to?



Only time will tell, in the meantime I'm sure we all look forward to next chapter in the Tiger Woods #1 player in the world saga.

Tiger Woods – Paragon of Virtue

Gatorade confirmed Tuesday it is discontinuing its Tiger Woods drink but says it made the decision before the golfer's car accident led to a media firestorm surrounding his personal life. The decision to drop the drink, called Tiger Focus, was first reported by trade publication Beverage Digest in an issue dated Nov. 25, two days before the incident at Woods' home in Florida. The publication's editor, John Sicher, said he learned of the decision the week of Nov. 9.

Perhaps the decision to discontinue Tiger Focus was made before his accident. Perhaps no conspiracy exists. But there still is a whitewash going on here. Gatorade is failing to mention the real reason for the drink’s discontinuation – it tastes like caddy Steve Williams’ socks after 18 holes.



And now on top of it all, there are reports of Tiger Woods sports figures on Clearance at the ol’ Toys R Us. Ouch!

I asked my wife (yes I have I wife - yes she is a woman) this evening if she thought people would be able to root for Tiger any longer after this whole mess and her response was “As long as he wins.”



And she’s right. Just ask Kobe Bryant. Tiger didn’t even (allegedly) rape anyone – as far as we know. This whole thing gets scummier by the hour. Yuck.

Cougars, Tigers, and Cell Phones…Oh My

With the world’s greatest golfer publicly scrutinized and complaining about it, the media is in a frenzy to break the latest news. So here it is…the latest rumor around the water cooler is that Tiger Woods' wife Elin threw Tiger’s cell phone and broke his tooth. This same missing tooth is one of the main reasons Tiger did not show up for his hosted golf tournament in Thousand Oaks, California this week.



A cocktail waitress from Los Angeles has said that she can prove there supposedly have been over 300 text messages from their 31 month affair. Tiger admitted “I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves,” Woods said on his Web site. “I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.”



Audio tapes left supposedly by a man calling himself Tiger on Jaimee Grubbs voicemail mentioned to not have her name displaying when she calls:

Hey, it’s, uh, it’s Tiger. I need you to do me a huge favor. Um, can you please, uh, take your name off your phone. My wife went through my phone. And, uh, may be calling you. If you can, please take your name off that and, um, and what do you call it just have it as a number on the voicemail, just have it as your telephone number. That’s it, OK. You gotta do this for me. Huge. Quickly. All right. Bye.

Tiger also stated this on his website:

I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology.

Neither Tiger nor anyone else has confirmed that it was he whom left the voise message on Jaimee Grubbs phone.
